Woman Killed In Turnpike Crash Involving Several Vehicles Near Vero Beach

VERO BEACH, Fla. β€” A 63-year-old woman from Greenacres was killed in a crash that temporarily shut down the Turnpike, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened on the southbound lanes near mile marker 173, according to FHP. The crash involved six cars and two semi tractor-trailers. Traffic was being diverted off Exit 193 in Yeehaw Junction.

Traffic was already stopped in both lanes near mile marker 173 due to a previous unrelated crash, FHP said. One of the tractor-trailers driving on the southbound side failed to stop for traffic and rear-ended the vehicle in front of it, causing a chain reaction of six vehicles.

The dynamics of how the other vehicles were involved is “pending further investigation,” FHP said. Four people were transported to Lawnwood Medical Center with two of them suffering minor injuries and the other two with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

The woman from Greenacres, who was a passenger in one of the vehicles, died at the scene.

Attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded about the crash.Β  β€œCases involving accidents with tractor trailers are always subject to heightened scrutiny because of the additional regulations placed on drivers of those vehicles. Unfortunately, in our practice, we have seen numerous instances where drivers blatantly violate these regulations, which results in catastrophic consequences.”
