Four Surprisingly Dangerous Household Items that can Injure Children

Parents of young children are notorious for being overly careful when it comes to the safety of their child. If you have been told you’re one of these people, you have a good reason to be cautious. For a kid or toddler, even the most simple household objects can become dangerous items that can cause serious injuries. Many items, such as cleaning chemicals and sharp objects, are obvious hazards that parents keep far out of their child’s reach. But some objects are far less obviously dangerous. The following is a list of four surprisingly dangerous household items for children.

1. Clothing

When you buy an outfit for your toddler, you expect it to be made and tested with safety in mind. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Drawstrings and shoelaces can easily get caught on playground equipment, causing strangulation or other injuries. Although federal safety regulations exist, no item is completely safe and it’s always best to double-check that your child’s clothing can’t snag during playtime.

2. Plants

Indoor plants are a popular way to brighten up any home. While beautiful decorations, these plants can be dangerous if ingested. Keeping a constant eye on your child is impossible, and sometimes a child’s curiosity can get the better of them. Lilies and Ivy are two common plant types that are harmful to humans, so if your home style includes either of these flora, it may be best to remove them from the home.

3. Plastic bags

Many snacks and toys that are marketed to children come in a plastic bag that isn’t safe for babies and toddlers. The next time you hand your child a snack, make sure that the bag is safe for them. Some tips include bringing a paper bag or plastic cup to pour the snack into first before handing it off.

4. Pet Food

Raising a dog or cat alongside your child will undoubtedly keep you busy. But make sure that if your pet leaves any food in their bowl that it’s in a safe place away from your child. While it may be nutritious for your furry friend, your child could become seriously sick if they decide to reach into the bowl and try some for a snack.
